Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chai spice blend
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, chai spice, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the orange zest.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg, then pour into the dry mixture and mix gently until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface, shape into a 1-inch thick circle, and cut into wedges.
  7. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet and brush tops with melted butter.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a vegan option, use coconut oil instead of butter and substitute the egg with a flaxseed or chia seed egg.
