Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • Drops of red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line your cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. Add eggs and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry mixture. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Stir in drops of red food coloring until the desired shade is reached.
  6. Scoop tablespoons of dough onto prepared baking sheets, spacing them apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes until set around the edges but still soft in the middle.
  7. Let cool on trays for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat together softened butter and cream cheese, adding powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Add milk if too thick.
  9. Once cookies are completely cool, frost each cookie generously with cream cheese frosting.

Notes

For added fun, sprinkle red velvet crumbs or festive sprinkles on top of the frosted cookies.
