- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- Drops of red food coloring
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line your cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
- In another bowl, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. Add eggs and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry mixture. Be careful not to overmix.
- Stir in drops of red food coloring until the desired shade is reached.
- Scoop tablespoons of dough onto prepared baking sheets, spacing them apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes until set around the edges but still soft in the middle.
- Let cool on trays for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat together softened butter and cream cheese, adding powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Add milk if too thick.
- Once cookies are completely cool, frost each cookie generously with cream cheese frosting.
Notes
For added fun, sprinkle red velvet crumbs or festive sprinkles on top of the frosted cookies.
