Description

A heartwarming and delightful combination of sweet and spicy flavors with tender smashed sweet potatoes, perfect for family gatherings and holiday dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium sweet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or olive oil for a vegan option)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Scrub the sweet potatoes and prick them with a fork. Place on a lined baking sheet and roast for 45-60 minutes until tender.
  2. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté minced garlic until fragrant.
  3. Let the roasted sweet potatoes cool slightly, peel the skins, and transfer them to a mixing bowl. Add the sautéed garlic, maple syrup, and spices.
  4. Using a fork or potato masher, smash and mix until well combined. Adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, or more spices as desired.
  5. Serve warm, garnished with fresh herbs or cooked bacon if preferred.

Notes

For a different twist, consider substituting sweet potatoes with butternut squash or pumpkin. Add sautéed onions or ginger for extra flavor.
