Description

A delightful pastry filled with cinnamon-spiced apples, wrapped in a buttery, flaky crust, perfect for breakfast, dessert, or snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 34 medium crisp apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for apple filling)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and yeast. Mix in sugar, salt, and warm milk. Add melted butter and beaten eggs. Gradually stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
  3. Peel, core, and slice apples. Toss them with cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar in a bowl.
  4. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Place the apple mixture down the center, leaving space on edges.
  5. Fold the dough over the filling and crimp edges to seal. Place on a baking sheet and twist into an ‘S’ shape, pinching the ends.
  6. Cover and let rise for an additional 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Whisk together powdered sugar and milk for icing and drizzle over warm kringle before serving.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour. Unsweetened applesauce can replace some butter for a lighter option.
